Yes, with 2.3.99-pre3 config as:

CONFIG_USB=m
CONFIG_USB_UHCI=m
CONFIG_USB_DEVICEFS=y
CONFIG_USB_PRINTER=m
CONFIG_USB_HID=m
# CONFIG_USB_KBD is not set
# CONFIG_USB_MOUSE is not set
CONFIG_INPUT_KEYBDEV=m
CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSEDEV=m
CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSEDEV_MIX=y
CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV=m

then insmod in order: usbcore, input, mousedev, hid, usb-uhci.

all the while watching (tail -f) /var/log/messages

you should also make:
crw-------   1 root     root      10,  32 Jan  2 17:31 /dev/usbmouse

in X, the USB mouse and the touchpad mix, you can use either/both at the same
time.

you might also want the latest modutils 2.3.10??
